Is Punnamada Finishing Point the same as your Alleppey houseboat boarding jetty?

Not necessarily. Punnamada Finishing Point is a useful area name and a well-known houseboat hub, but it is not a guarantee that your boat will be waiting at one universal jetty. Operators may board from different landings along Finishing Point Road, elsewhere around Punnamada, Pallathuruthy, Kainakary or a resort’s private jetty. Before travelling, ask for the exact map pin, boat name or number, coordinator’s phone number and reporting time.

If a driver asks where to drop you, “Punnamada” or “Finishing Point” may get you into the right neighbourhood but not beside the right boat. Treat the area name as the start of the directions, not the complete directions.

Why the names cause confusion

Punnamada is the lake area associated with the Nehru Trophy Boat Race. Official tourism sources describe the race on Punnamada Lake and refer to its finishing point, so “Finishing Point” is a real local landmark—not merely a booking-company label. The same waterfront area also has roads, businesses and numerous boat operations.

That is why listings often combine several labels: Punnamada, Finishing Point, Punnamada Jetty or Finishing Point Road. They help identify the general area, but an individual houseboat still needs a precise place to meet. A vessel may also move between a parking berth, boarding landing and overnight halt.

Kerala Tourism’s official houseboat information confirms that houseboats operate from Alappuzha and directs travellers to local tourism contacts. Its accredited-provider directory also includes Alappuzha operators at addresses beyond Finishing Point, including Pallathuruthy and Kainakary. The Alappuzha district administration publishes both day-cruise and overnight houseboat formats, but neither source promises that every booking begins at one common jetty. Your operator’s current confirmation is the authority for your particular boat.

What to request before you leave your hotel or station

• A clickable map pin: not only a typed place name or screenshot.
• The boat’s identifying details: its name, registration or visible number where available, plus a current exterior photo.
• The boarding coordinator’s number: the person who will answer at arrival time, not only a general sales contact.
• A nearby road landmark: useful when the final landing is down a narrow lane or cannot be reached directly by a large vehicle.
• Reporting time and cruising time: arriving at noon does not always mean the boat leaves at noon.
• Return location: ask whether you disembark at the same landing the next morning.

Send the pin to your driver before departure. If you have several suitcases, children or an older traveller, ask whether the vehicle can stop beside the boarding point or whether a short walk and steps are involved.

Four details that are easy to mix up

Punnamada Lake

This is the broad backwater and boat-race setting. DTPC Alappuzha identifies Punnamada as part of Vembanad Lake and a place for boat tours. It is far too broad to use as a final pickup instruction.

Finishing Point

This is the familiar landmark name associated with the race finish and the surrounding houseboat area. It can be a useful destination for the first leg of a transfer, but multiple landings and businesses can exist around the same area.

Punnamada Jetty

People may use this phrase loosely for a landing in the Punnamada area. Do not assume a map result with that label is your operator’s boarding point unless the operator sent it.

Your operator’s boarding jetty

This is the only location that matters at check-in. It may be at Finishing Point, elsewhere in Punnamada, at Pallathuruthy, in Kainakary or at another arranged landing. The exact choice can depend on the boat, route, parking arrangement and conditions on the day.

If you arrive at the wrong point

1. Do not board a different boat simply because someone says it belongs to the same company.
2. Call the named coordinator and share your live location.
3. Confirm the boat name or number and compare it with your booking confirmation.
4. Ask whether the correct landing is walkable with luggage or requires an auto-rickshaw or car.
5. Keep payment receipts and the agreed boat photos available on your phone.

If the exact boat was part of the deal, verify it before the luggage is loaded. A vague promise of “same category” is not the same as confirmation that you will board the boat shown in your agreed photos.

How much arrival buffer should you leave?

Build in at least a modest local buffer instead of timing your arrival to the advertised departure minute. The last kilometre can involve traffic, a wrong map result, a narrow access road, unloading luggage and identifying the correct vessel. We do not publish a fixed transfer time because it changes with your starting point and the actual landing.

For a train arrival, share the train number and expected arrival time before you book the cruise.
