Where can you see how coir is made near Alleppey?
The most reliable public place is the International Coir Museum at Kalavoor, north of Alleppey town. It explains the traditional stages of coir production—from retting and fibre extraction to later mechanisation—and displays coir products. It is a museum, however, so do not assume a live worker demonstration will happen during your visit.
The museum works best as a focused one-to-two-hour heritage stop or as part of a north-Alleppey day. Confirm the day's opening, ticket and demonstration arrangements by phone before making a special journey.

What will you actually see?
The Central Coir Research Institute's museum information says the displays cover the history of coir, traditional processing, retting, fibre extraction and the industry's move toward mechanisation. A short film explains the industry's development, and an attached shop sells coir handicrafts and other products.
A useful way to understand the sequence is:
- Coconut husks are prepared so the fibre can be separated.
- Fibre is extracted and cleaned.
- Fibre is spun or twisted into yarn.
- Yarn is used for rope, mats and other finished products.
The museum explains these stages through displays and interpretation. A display about a process is not the same as watching a working production line, so ask specifically if seeing people spin or weave coir is important to you.
Where is the International Coir Museum?
The museum is at the Coir Board complex in Kalavoor. DTPC Alappuzha places it about 8.2 km from Alappuzha bus stand and about 10 km from Alappuzha railway station, on the north side of town.
For most visitors, an auto-rickshaw or taxi is the simplest option. If travelling by bus, confirm the current Kalavoor stop and the walk from the highway rather than navigating only to a broad locality pin.
Check before going: official listings conflict
Two official sources currently disagree:
- DTPC Alappuzha lists 9:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m. on all days, a ₹50 per-person ticket and offline booking.
- The Central Coir Research Institute's museum PDF lists 9:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m., Monday as the weekly holiday, and older ticket rates including ₹40 for an Indian adult.
Because the hours and fee do not match, do not plan a Monday visit or rely on a specific ticket price without confirming directly. The published museum phone numbers are 0477 2258067, 0477 2258512 and 0477 2258094.
How much time should you allow?
Allow roughly one hour inside if you want a clear introduction rather than a detailed study. Add road time from your accommodation and extra time if you want to watch the film or browse the shop.
This is not a town-centre walk-in attraction. From central Alleppey, treat it as a short northbound outing. It can pair sensibly with a confirmed stop around Marari or another north-coast plan, but it should not be squeezed between a fixed houseboat report time and a train.
Museum or working coir unit?
Choose the museum when you want a dependable public destination with context, tools, products and an explanation of the process.
Choose a working unit only when access has been arranged and the host has confirmed that visitors are welcome. Coir yards and workshops are workplaces, not automatic tourist attractions. Do not enter, photograph workers or handle machinery without permission.
What should you ask before visiting?
- Is the museum open on your date, especially if it is Monday or a public holiday?
- What is the current entry fee?
- Is the explanatory film running?
- Will any live spinning or weaving demonstration be available?
- Is photography permitted, and is there a separate fee?
- Is step-free access available for anyone who needs it?
If you are comparing this with other heritage stops, use the places-to-visit guide to keep your route in one part of Alappuzha district. For help fitting the museum into a realistic north-Alleppey day, send your date and hotel area through Alleppey.Life's planning page.

Information checked 1 October 2026. The museum's purpose, location and exhibits are supported by DTPC Alappuzha and the Central Coir Research Institute. Their published hours and ticket details conflict, so this guide reports both rather than presenting either as guaranteed.
