Mararikulam or Alappuzha station: which should you use for Marari?
Use Mararikulam station (MAKM) when your booked train has a scheduled stop there and your Marari accommodation has confirmed the final pickup. Use Alappuzha station (ALLP) when the train does not stop at Mararikulam, you arrive late or with heavy luggage, or you also need Alleppey town and backwater connections.
Mararikulam is the more local station for a Marari stay; Alappuzha is the larger rail gateway. The correct choice depends on your actual train and exact accommodation pin, not simply which station name looks closer on a map.

Quick station choice
| Your situation | Better starting choice | Confirm before travel |
|---|---|---|
| Your train is scheduled to stop at MAKM and you are staying around Marari | Mararikulam | Exact stop on your date and a pickup or local vehicle to the correct property |
| Your train passes MAKM but has no scheduled stop | Alappuzha or another station where it officially stops | Never plan to leave a train at an unscheduled crossing halt |
| You have heavy luggage, a late arrival or no confirmed pickup | Usually Alappuzha | Door-to-door vehicle, driver contact and property pin |
| You will visit Alleppey town or board a backwater boat before Marari | Alappuzha | Boat or hotel endpoint first, then onward transfer to Marari |
| You are leaving a Marari stay by train | The station served by your chosen train | Live timetable, pickup time and a conservative station buffer |
Why Mararikulam can be the simpler arrival
Marari Beach takes its name from Mararikulam, and Mararikulam station is the local rail stop for the village area. It can reduce unnecessary travel through Alappuzha town when all three conditions are true: your train is scheduled to stop, your stay is genuinely in the Marari area, and the final road transfer is confirmed.
Do not assume that “near the station” means walkable with bags. Marari refers to a wider coastal area with multiple accommodation and beach-access points. Send your train number and arrival time to the property, ask which station they recommend, and save the exact pickup point.
Why Alappuzha is often the safer default
Southern Railway’s current station list classifies Alappuzha (ALLP) as NSG 3 and Mararikulam (MAKM) as NSG 6. The categories reflect their different rail usage and earnings bands; they do not guarantee a particular train, taxi, lift or passenger facility. Practically, Alappuzha is the larger gateway and should be considered when your preferred train does not stop at MAKM or when you need town and backwater connections.
Kerala Tourism’s Marari guide names Alappuzha—about 15 km away—as the nearest railway station in its general visitor information. That is a dependable tourism-planning default, but it does not mean every Marari-bound passenger must ignore a scheduled MAKM stop. Your booked train and property location decide.
How to check the train correctly
- Search your exact train and travel date in the Indian Railways National Train Enquiry System.
- Check whether MAKM appears as a scheduled stop, not merely a station the train passes.
- Check the published arrival time again close to travel because timetables and service patterns can change.
- Confirm the last-mile pickup with your accommodation before choosing the station on your ticket.
- On the travel day, monitor live running information and keep the property or driver informed of delays.
Do not rely on an old blog timetable or a search-result train list. This guide deliberately avoids publishing a fixed list of MAKM stops because it can become stale.
What about the last mile to Marari Beach?
Neither station places every traveller directly on the sand. Ask the accommodation or driver for:
- the exact property and beach-access pin;
- which station they currently collect guests from;
- the fare or pickup arrangement in writing;
- a driver name and phone number before arrival;
- a backup plan if the train is delayed.
If you are visiting Marari as a day trip rather than staying there, read the realistic Marari Beach day-trip guide. For a day trip from Alleppey, direct road transport is usually simpler than building the outing around a local train.
Arrival examples
Direct train with a scheduled MAKM stop
Choose Mararikulam when the property confirms pickup and you are heading straight to a Marari stay. Recheck the stop close to travel and give the property your coach and delay information.
Long-distance train that stops only at ALLP
Use Alappuzha and continue by a pre-arranged vehicle. Do not change to a worse train merely to use the smaller local station unless the complete journey becomes genuinely easier.
Backwaters first, beach stay second
Use Alappuzha for the town or boat commitment, then continue to Marari by road. The Kochi-to-Alleppey transport guide helps choose the main rail or road arrival, while the Alleppey area guide explains how a Marari stay differs from town and Punnamada.
Frequently asked questions
Is Mararikulam station the nearest station to Marari Beach?
It is the local station for Mararikulam and may be the most direct rail stop for many Marari stays. However, Kerala Tourism’s general visitor information names Alappuzha as the nearest railway station. Because “Marari” covers multiple coastal properties and access points, choose from the train’s scheduled stops and your accommodation’s current transfer advice rather than a blanket distance claim.
Do all trains stop at Mararikulam?
No. Check your exact service in NTES. A train passing through MAKM or pausing for railway operations is not the same as a scheduled passenger stop.
Can I get an auto-rickshaw or taxi at Mararikulam station?
Do not make an unconditional availability assumption, especially for a late or disrupted arrival. Arrange the last mile with your stay or a driver before travel.
Should I use Alappuzha station for a houseboat and Marari stay?
Usually yes for the houseboat or town portion, because the exact Alleppey boarding point should be handled before the beach transfer. Move to Marari after the fixed boat commitment rather than adding a station change and luggage transfer to a tight reporting window.
