Is Krishnapuram Palace worth a day trip from Alleppey?
Yes, if you enjoy Kerala architecture, murals and small museums—but treat Krishnapuram Palace as a southern Alappuzha-district outing, not a quick stop in Alleppey town. The palace is near Kayamkulam, south of Alappuzha. It fits best when you are travelling toward Kayamkulam or Kollam, or when you can give the south-district route at least half a day.
For a first visit with only one day in Alleppey, the backwaters and town coast are usually the stronger priority. Choose the palace when heritage is a real interest or when its location matches your onward journey.
Where is the palace?
Krishnapuram Palace is in Alappuzha district near Kayamkulam, on the Ochira side of town. Kerala Tourism places Krishnapuram about 2.5 km from Kayamkulam, while the Alappuzha district administration lists Kayamkulam railway station about 2 km from the palace.
That makes Kayamkulam the useful transport reference—not Alleppey Beach, Punnamada or the Alappuzha boat jetties. Check a live road or rail plan for your exact date rather than relying on a fixed travel time.

Kerala Tourism describes Krishnapuram as an eighteenth-century palace associated with Marthanda Varma and the former Kayamkulam rulers. Its traditional Kerala architecture includes gabled roofs, narrow corridors and dormer windows. The protected monument also contains museum collections, paintings and artefacts.
The best-known work is the large Gajendra Moksham mural. The Alappuzha district administration also highlights the palace museum's antique sculptures, paintings and bronzes. Go for the building and collection rather than expecting a large palace complex or a full-day attraction by itself.
Opening hours and the check that matters
Kerala Tourism currently publishes opening hours of 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and says the palace is closed on Mondays and national holidays. These details were checked on 28 September 2026.

How to plan the visit from Alleppey
By car or taxi
Travel south toward Kayamkulam and use a current map for the final turn to Krishnapuram. A car is simplest when you also want Ambalappuzha, Karumadikuttan or another south-district stop. Do not add all of them automatically: choose one or two anchors and verify each site's access first.
By train
Use the official Indian Railways enquiry for a current Alappuzha–Kayamkulam train, then arrange the short local transfer from Kayamkulam station. Do not build the day around an old timetable or assume every train stops there.
With an onward journey
The palace is most efficient after checking out of Alleppey when you are continuing south. Keep luggage secured in your vehicle or accommodation; the museum visit should not be your luggage-storage plan.
A realistic south-district outline
- Leave Alleppey after breakfast, with the palace's current opening confirmed.
- Choose at most one earlier stop—such as Ambalappuzha—if it matches your interests and access is verified.
- Visit Krishnapuram Palace during the published daytime window.
- Continue south or return to Alleppey without attaching a fixed boat departure to the same afternoon.
