This is a slow, local village canoeing experience in Alleppey that takes you deep into the island villages of the backwaters.
You begin with a local passenger ferry ride across open backwaters to reach a village island. From there, you canoe through narrow village canals, walk through village paths near paddy fields, and share a simple homemade local meal.
Designed for travelers who want to experience real village life, quiet canals, and everyday moments beyond the usual tourist routes.
What you’ll do
Guided from the very beginning
An Alleppey.Life team member receives you at the meeting point and coordinates the experience from start to finish.
The canoe is rowed by a local, and the guide accompanies you throughout.
Local passenger ferry to the village
A 30+ minute public passenger ferry ride used daily by locals.
It takes you far away from town, across vast open backwaters, to reach a distant island village.
This itself is an activity that’s a must do in Alleppey.
Main Experience
The 3 hour village canoe tour
Your wooden canoe drifts slowly through narrow, peaceful village canals where bigger engine boats cannot enter.
Close to village homes and daily life along the water.
Simple, homemade local meal
A local breakfast or lunch (or both) is included, depending on the time slot.
Home-cooked, non-commercial, mostly vegetarian.
Fish can be arranged on request.
Short village walk near paddy fields
A relaxed walk through village paths and paddy fields that adds context to what you see from the water. It offers a closer look at everyday island village life.

What kind of canoe is used?
A traditional wooden canoe with a simple roof for shade. It has soft backrest and seating to sit down comfortably.
The boat will be paddled with a local oar, by our guide who will sit in the further back end.
What exactly is a local passenger ferry?
It’s a public boat used daily by locals to travel between island villages. You’ll be seated comfortably and travel slowly across open backwaters.
It’ll be in this boat that you will come to our village from the town, before your main canoe trip begins.
What’s the duration & pace?
The experience takes around 3 hours, with additional time for ferry travel and village walking.
This is a relaxed experience and is not rushed. The pace is kept slow so you have time to observe, walk, and enjoy the surroundings without feeling hurried.
